Dymock Remembers
Remembered with Honour
Those who left this village in the Great War 1914-1918 never to return
Dymock is located in North-west Gloucestershire on the border with Herefordshire. It was one of the largest villages in the area and at the time the parish included the area known as Bromesberrow Heath which was transferred to Bromesberrow Parish later in the 20th century. Where Dymock is recorded in official and military records we have taken this to mean the parish as it was in 1914 and not the modern boundaries.
Because of its size, it is not surprising that over 200 men from the village served in the armed services during the Great War. In addition there were a number who also served their country in civilian roles, at least one of whom lost his life and is commemorated by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission in their memorials and records.
The list below gives the names of all those who are remembered on the Dymock War Memorial or the Roll of Honour in St Mary’s Church or who are recorded in official records as having lived within the parish of Dymock at some time before they left, never to return.
We have taken considerable effort and time to ensure the list is as comprehensive as possible, but we must extend our apologies to anyone whose relatives or friends are not included. We also are aware that there are some men for whom we can find no information to confirm their links with Dymock. Indeed there are some who are listed on the Dymock war memorial for whom no other records have been found. It is quite likely that their names were misspelt or otherwise recorded incorrectly in other records or simply who were known by a name other than that which appeared on their formal records.
The records show the large number of different regiments in which men from the village served, perhaps reflecting the closeness of the village to other counties. There was no evidence of a large number of men joining one or more local regiments together and presumably those who served were simply sent to whichever regiment was recruiting on the day they joined up.
One man who lost his life was a civilian but otherwise all the men who died were in the armed services. There were no women found who lost their lives in the war. All were young, the oldest being less than 40 years of age when he died.
